Serbian is very different from other languages, but there are some aspects of the language that make it easier than others. There are many recommended ways to learn Serbian.
Become familiar with the Serbian alphabet (Cyrillic alphabet):
Tackle Serbian grammar:
Listen to lots of Serbian audio:
Serbian, called српски (srpski) in the language, is the official language in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, a co-official language in Kosovo, and a minority recognized language in Montenegro, Croatia, North Macedonia, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Serbian is spoken as a native language by approximately 9.5 million people in Serbia and abroad. It’s mutually intelligible with Croatian, Bosnian, and Montenegrin.
Serbian speakers are fully digraphic, meaning they can fluently read and write in both the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets. If you’re interested in learning Slavic languages, having access to a language using two writing systems offers you an easier entry point than a language that uses only Cyrillic. And if you’re a grammar nerd, Serbian is the language for you. It has the right number of grammatical feature to offer you a challenge including seven grammatical cases, three genders, and verb aspect. It’s also a pro-drop language, meaning you can drop the pronoun and get by with fewer words to share what you’d like to say.
